My Journey from FMR Mentee to Design Intern at LABRUM London
My Journey from FMR Mentee to Design Intern at LABRUM London
Written by Marcelle Agyapong
My name is Marcelle and my interests in arts and fashion, much like many others, began in childhood. However, it wasn’t just a passing fancy; it was a passion that grew stronger with each summer visit to Ghana, where my parents encouraged me to delve into the craft of freehand pattern cutting and fashion design. Walking through the vibrant fabric markets of Ghana, I was captivated by the colours, patterns, and textures. They weren’t just materials; they were stories waiting to be told. It was clear to me then: my future lay in the world of textiles.
The year 2022 marked a significant milestone for me. Graduating with a first-class degree in textile design, specialising in embroidery, felt like a tangible achievement of my childhood dreams. However, stepping out of university also meant facing the real world, a realm far more complex and daunting than any academic challenge. I felt unprepared, needing guidance through this new phase of life. That’s when I found Fashion Minority Report.
FMR wasn’t just a stepping stone; it was a crucial support system. It connected me with a mentor who, from our very first meeting, understood my aspirations and background in West African storytelling. He pointed me towards Labrum London, knowing it was where my personal and professional interests would align perfectly. His guidance led to an opportunity that changed the course of my career.
Working at Labrum London has been an enriching experience. It’s more than just a job; it’s a place where I can contribute to projects that resonate with my roots and artistic vision. Whether it’s collaborating on high-profile projects or contributing to collections like “Nomoli Odyssey,” each day is a lesson in the importance of teamwork, adaptability, and creative expression.
My mentor has been instrumental beyond just career advice. He helped me navigate the complexities of the professional world, from understanding freelance contracts to refining my CV and portfolio. His guidance has been a mix of practical advice and insightful wisdom, preparing me for future opportunities.
Today, I find myself freelancing part-time at Jennifer Clair as a production assistant while continuing my role within the Labrum design team. Admittedly, I haven’t figured it all out yet—does anyone ever? But where I am at right now feels good. I’m just trying to absorb every bit of knowledge and experience that comes my way.
If I could share a piece of advice, it would be to embrace the uncertainty, seek mentorship, and stay open to every opportunity. After all, it’s the journey that shapes us, and I’m excited to see where mine takes me next.
